Synchronized skating, or “Synchro” is a specialized discipline of skating involving groups of eight or more skaters performing various group formations. The objective is for the team to perform as one unit, while demonstrating quality edges, power and flow. Our Club created its Synchro program in 2014, with one 16 skaters, beginner level team and we have grown exponentially into several teams with almost 60 skaters participating in various categories! Our teams have consistently won gold medals at local events, including the BC/YK Championships! Our next goal is to have a team attend the National Synchronized Skating Championships.
Synchro is fun and exciting, but also provides camaraderie among skaters. Besides being a ton of fun and a great way to stay involved with skating, participation helps skaters build social and teamwork skills. Skaters have the opportunity to show their skills, gain greater self-awareness, and enjoy an activity that they love the most in a team format. Skaters build friendships with other skaters and their coaches, which is a great way for your skater to expand their social skills and as well as the recognize the value of every teammates’ abilities in contributing toward a shared goal.
Your skater is not the only one who will benefit from participation in synchro. Moms, dads, grandparents, and siblings can attend competitions and cheer each other on, providing a bonding opportunity for the whole family.
